Templates: Latex

Elsevier provides LaTeX templates. The most appropriate options for JME are:
  1. elsarticle-template-harv.tex – template file for name-year references, in which also is included a short description of reference options (e.g. Jones et al. (1968) or (Jones et al. 1968))
  2. elsarticle-harv.bst – bibtex style file for name-year references, to be used in combination with a BibTex database
From the options for the els article class, during the review process use the following options:
  • review – with extra interline space for use in the review process
  • 12pt – ensures that a 12 pt font is used

Templates: Scientific Word or Workplace

These instructions assume that the version is swp5.0 or higher.

Installing ingredients within Scientific Word:
  1. Download the files in the zip archive.
  2. The style file, sw20nhej2.sty, must be placed in the subdirectory "SW macros".  In a typical installation, it is located at \swp55\TCITeX\TeX\LaTeX\SWmacros.
  3. The class file, sw20nhej2.cst, must be placed in the subdirectory "[Special]".  In a typical installation it is located at \swp55\Styles\[Special] or at \swp55\styles\article
  4. The JME shell, Journal of Monetary Economics.shl, must be placed in the subdirectory that contains shells. In a typical installation, it is located at \swp55\shells\articles\sw.

Creating a new document
  1. In SW, go to FILES and choose the option NEW
  2. Under the option SHELL DIRECTORIES, choose ARTICLE
  3. Under the option SHELL FILES, choose Journal of Monetary Economics
  4. You will get a new document: save it with a new name (like jme.tex). If you typeset this new document, you should see the material that is printed here.
  5. Make sure that the current style is \swp50\styles\[Special]\SW20NHEJ2.cst, by going to FILES and choosing the option STYLE.

Converting your existing document to draft JME style.
  1. To enter the body of your document, don’t just convert your original document! Delete the material in the body of the new document and copy the contents of your existing document (mydoc.tex)  into the new file (jme.tex above). Save your new document
  2. Modify the front matter. Copy the front matter from your existing document (mydoc.tex) into your new document (jme.tex). Save your new document. 
  3. When you typeset this document, the result should be a double spaced manuscript with 12 point type and line numbering.

Converting your draft document to final JME style.
  1. Open your draft document (jme.tex) and then save a copy, that you will convert to final style, with a new name, say jmefinal.tex
  2. Set the type size, select: Typeset -> Options and Packages -> Class Options -> Body point text size = 10 point
  3. Set the line spacing, select: Typeset -> Options and Packages -> Package Options tab -> Setspace package -> click the Modify button to change the "currently selected options for the package setpace" from doublespacing to single-spacing
  4. Change the margins, select: Typeset -> Preamble. The standard margin for draft mode is set with the statement: \geometry{left=1in,right=1in,top=1.25in,bottom=1in} . Change the statement to \geometry{left=.65in,right=0.65in,top=0.85in,bottom=0.85in}

Templates: Microsoft Word

General requirements:
  • Margins: 1 inch right and left margin; 1 inch top margin; .75 inch bottom margin (MS-Word commands: adjust via file, page setup, margins).
  • Justify text (MS-Word commands: line spacing, more, indents and spacing, general, alignment, justified).
  • Running head (MS-Word commands: view, headers and footers, insert text, center)
  • Page numbers at bottom of each page (MS-Word commands: insert, page numbers, bottom of each page, centered).
  • Line numbering (MS-Word commands: view, header and footer, layout, line number)

Draft mode:
  • double spaced
  • text in 12 point type,
  • footnotes in 10 point type
  • Example: PDF, Word

Final mode:
  • single spaced
  • text in 10 point type
  • footnotes in 8 point type
  • Example: PDF, Word
